The Quarter Rule
At Terrific Auto Glass, a general rule of thumb we follow is that we can typically repair quarter-sized rock chips. If the impact crater and the tiny spiderweb cracks radiating from it can be completely covered by a standard U.S. quarter, there is a very high likelihood that a repair will be successful. Additionally, we can often repair single, clean cracks up to three inches long.
How the Repair Works
Windshield repair is actually an injection process. Our technicians clean the impact zone, attach a specialized vacuum tool over the chip to remove trapped air, and force a high-quality acrylic resin into the micro-cracks. We then cure the resin using a specialized UV light.
Why You Shouldn't Wait
Resin repairs restore the structural integrity of your glass and prevent the chip from spreading. However, if dirt, road grime, or water gets into the chip before it's repaired, the resin won't bond clearly or strongly. We recommend getting quarter-sized chips repaired immediately before they spread into three-inch cracks that require full replacements.
